Charcoal, dove, slate, graphite, silver: these are all shades of gray. Unsure what to wear this spring and how to put it together? Well, the monochromatic (or tone-on-tone) look is in, allowing you to make an impact that’s chic – from head to toe.

Featured this week on the Marilyn Dennis Show were a parade of beautiful tone-on-tone ensembles for early spring. This trend is effective in – yet not limited to -neutrals such as grays, browns and metallics. Be inspired by items you may already have in your closet, or get out there and find some new pieces that can be worn together or separately, depending on your mood. Having several staple items in the same colour will make dressing a whole lot easier on those days when you just “don’t have a thing to wear”. Sometimes, all it takes is pairing a simple black dress with all your monochrome accessories to create a sophisticated and memorable outfit.

Marsala, a deep, warm burgundy is a big colour for 2015 and can be layered as a monochrome as well. Because it’s a rich hue, it will carry you through to fall and even next winter. But be careful! Make sure you have a good eye for colour matching, as the wrong pairing of hues can have the opposite effect. The good news is most retail fashion lines are limited to one colour palette per season, so it’s almost impossible to clash if your pieces are bought in the same store.

Solids and clean lines will always heighten style, elevating your look to that of the fashion magazines, year after year.

Tone-on-tone is timeless, so elevate your style: go monochromatic today!
